Back when I first moved to San Francisco, I would sit for hours in Cafe Picaro on 16th Street, working on songs and drinking coffee by the gallon. Often I'd see an odd character at the table beside me, an elderly man with a pencil mustache who would carry on elaborate conversations with himself in Spanish. One night as I sat there, feeling a little down, he hobbled in wearing a brand new pair of bright red running shoes. This song came to me so quickly, it's almost as if the old man wrote it and just tossed it to me from the next table.
lyrics
AN IMPROBABLE DREAM
Don Quixote sits in a café
Talking to his magic shoes
Eleanor Rigby gives him the car keys
Says it’s seldom ours to choose
On the road to almost anywhere
Don’t forget to notice when you’re there
And dream
An improbable dream
And live
An impossible lifetime
Things
are more than they seem
So dream baby, dream baby, dream
Marilyn Monroe, talking to Van Gogh
Catching up on all she missed
Keeping a secret, everyone’s weakness
Still it never passed her lips
On the road to somewhere we can’t say
Don’t forget to laugh along the way
And dream
An improbable dream
To live
This impossible lifetime
Things are more than they seem
So dream baby, dream baby, dream
Crazy as it seems
Dream baby, dream baby dream
